- Yes, the guys are working on a new album as we speak. I'm not entirely sure when it's going to be released, but I do know that they've been working on new songs for a few months now.
This is just the tip of the ice berg.
I'll have more exclusives very soon.

- Big welcome... big big welcome (Studio Blog #1)
Big welcome... Big big welcome
Pagoda's new album is being recorded live in Brooklyn, NY by Hugh Pool at Excello Recording Studios. Documenting the sessions are several HD cameramen and numerous photographers shooting as the band records. The new material has a decidedly Eastern feel to it, incorporating everything from Arabic, Japanese and African rhythms into Pagoda's trademark grunge. Whereas these elements underlaid the group's first release, they are brought to the forefront for its follow-up.
Ma-ma-ma-Africa...
I arrived minutes before the band began recording Zahara, which tells the tale of a man nicknamed 'Crazy Eyes' who leads the group through the desert. Fittingly, the final moments of the song erupt into an African style jam. The band nailed it on the first take but decided to do two more anyway. And by the end of this song I too had 'crazy eyes' but I'll refer to that incident as the one that shall not be named...
Your mascara is running!
As the string section arrived, the band jammed on an instrumental which will be available exclusively on PagodaOnline.com and the official MySpace page. I sat in on this recording and watched the band turn out a frenetic middle Eastern style track, laden with heavy cello from Chris, ethereal guitar work from Michael and a thick-as-a-Bible rhythm section from Willie and Reece. It's as indicative of the new material as any of the new official songs.
Broken Toys...
The string section was brought in directly after the jam as it was time to record Blood Crosses, one of the new songs that have already become a staple of Pagoda's recent concerts. The track picks up where Alone and Death to Birth left off, with an eerie guitar riff and unnerving cello, backed up by the string section. Fans of Pagoda's epics will eat this song up and come back for more. There were five full takes of this song, and afterwards we listened back to it in the control room and I believe the last one hit the spot (for me anyway).
This one goes up to 11...
Hugh confirmed that there will be about six or seven new cuts on the record, and four have already been recorded. Tomorrow the band heads up to the studio to lay down the final tracks and I too will be documenting the process by camera. From one Pagoda fan to thousands of others, the new material is going to blow your mind. If you're a fan of the band already, you'll appreciate the progression in sound, musicianship, songwriting and the overall vibe of the new material. If you're just finding out about Pagoda, you too will have your mind blown as this record doesn't pick up where the last one left off so much as it turns it completely on its ear.
TOMORROW: MORE TALES FROM THE STUDIO AND BEHIND THE SCENES PHOTOGRAPHY FROM PAGODAONLINE.COM!

- Pass the love around... (Studio Blog #2)
Shot down in an airplane...
Arrived at the studio at around 1 PM today, right in the middle of the band experiencing some technical difficulties in the studio. The delay was short, and once things got started it didn't take long for things to pick up where they left off. The band hit the studio to work on Drop D, a heavy, plodding semi-metal song with a bassline that shook the entire control room. This one is going to take everything you thought you knew about Pagoda and kick it in the nuts. Extremely fucking hard, might I add. He was shot down in an airplane! Mike wails over the chaos, punctuated by tormented cello work on behalf of Mr. Hoffman and Bonham-like drumming by Reece, ending in a flurry of guitar feedback and distortion. The band recorded several takes of this opus, though I believe they've already decided on one.
Laughing in the Middle of it...
The piano you see above was decimated by Hugh's boat motor, anchor and several guitars. I didn't hang around long enough to see the outcome of the anarchy, but I believe the piano is used on one of the songs I wasn't privvy to. Anyway, catering arrived after Drop D and Mike took Tara's camera, proceeding to take pictures of all present who had their mouths full (yours truly included - and that's one that isn't going in the fancam). The atmosphere in the studio over the past few days has been light, with everyone joking in the middle of the chaos, mostly at each others' expense. We ain't doing this next one in more than five takes Reece proclaimed before recording Native American. I'm gonna knock this one out of the fucking gate! And he did...
I'm a Crazy White Man but I Don't Want War...
As stated, Native American was next, picking up right where Drop D left off in terms of heaviness. Do we have health insurance? one camera man asked before climbing a ladder that reached the top of Excello's ceiling. The cameramen deserve an extra round of applause as they busted their ass the entire two days trying to document as much of the insanity as they could. Native American is another fast-paced song with frenetic drumming and politically conscious lyrics. Hugh broke out the lapsteel for one of the takes, though it remains to be seen if that's the one they plan on using.
Pass the love around...
That does it for my in-studio blog. Hope you guys enjoyed it. A special thanks to Pagoda for inviting me out, and I can't wait to hear the finished product - trust me, you can't either. From the Danny Elfman-like string section on Blood Crosses to the African style jamming on Zahara and the overall chaos of Drop D, this album is going to blow your minds. Extra shout outs to Hugh, Jim, Tara, Sam, Brodie, and all the rest of the camera crew and everyone at Excello. Pagoda's going to blow your mind in '09. Stay tuned for more photos, video and audio clips and an exclusive jam from Pagoda to the rest of you... et les images jointes: Et je tiens à signaler qu'ils ont vraiment besoin d'un(e) photographe...
